A New Schoolteacher. A pair of bullies and a murder investigation. Life in Chestnut, Wyoming was about to get a lot more exciting.
Clary Mae Watson wanted to see her brother’s killer brought to justice. Determined to find an eye witness to the crime, she kept butting heads with the Marshal, Lukey Boyd Haskins. Luke would rather she returned home and left the murder investigation to him, but she surprised him by taking a teaching position for the one-room school in town.
Clary Mae’s courage and strength of character would help her face the schoolroom bullies who ran off every other teacher the small town tried to hire. That same stubborn quality landed her in hot water with the Marshal, who didn’t hesitate to put her over his knee for the spanking that he always felt her brother Adam should have given her.
Luke had always thought of Clary Mae as Adam’s pesky little sister, but suddenly he realized that she was not so little any more. She had grown into a beautiful woman, someone for whom he was beginning to develop feelings. How can he keep her safe, and yet let her do her job? And will she even want to see him again, after he puts her over his knee?

I enjoyed this murder mystery romance that has a great cast of characters and situations. Clary Mae Watson is a determined and is somewhat of a hotheaded woman who is determined to locate the killer of her brother and sister-in-law. Marshall Luke Haskins was good friends with Adam Watson and is on the case to find the killer of Adam and Ruth Watson, but he also is determined to keep Clary Mae safe in the process. The story takes the reader on several adventures and deals with a deranged madman who is after Clary Mae. The plot twist involves several individuals and scenarios that keep the pages turning as the story plays out. There are several spanking scenes and intimacy is only implied.
I like the storyline and overall circumstances and outcome. I cringe at some of the dialogs with the overuse of people’s names in conversations to each other. A little fact checking would prevent using expressions that did not belong in the 1870s and did not come into play until the 1900s. Having stated that, I would still recommend this story.

Clary Mae edition by Joannie Kay Blushing Books Romance eBooks Reviews
The author does not disappoint with this story. It’s a very enjoyable read that has all of the elements of an entertaining tale – interesting main characters, charming supporting characters, vengeful bad guy, mystery, action, spanking and lots of love! I have enjoyed many books by this author through the years, and this book has the same wonderful qualities of her other books – including the amazing family that she is always able to incorporate. If you’re looking for a light fun read – I would recommend this book.
An enjoyable historical western story about a young woman who is determined to bring her brother and sister-in-law's killer to justice. Clary Mae was stubborn to the point of being annoying at first. I admired her determination, but she was quite reckless. I enjoyed her more when she gave Luke the respect he deserved as a Marshall and a family friend and let him do the investigating. I also really enjoyed that Luke gave Clary Mae respect as a teacher and didn't interfere overly much with how she handled things. Unlike many of Kay's stories, Luke actually listened to Clary Mae and refrained from spanking when he realized it wasn't warranted. He also stepped in an made sure another man didn't punish her. I really liked that about the characters this time. Only one thing caused me to give this story a 4 instead of a 5 - it became irritating when Clary continued to call Luke "Lukey Boyd". This is a grown man - the name just didn't fit the tough Marshal's personality. Otherwise, a good read for a weekend afternoon!
Love this book.
I have loved every book I have ever read that was written by Joanie Kay. this book has now become one of my favorites. it was great
A sweet western romance which this author writes so well. There is mystery, adventure and danger combined with a loving family and a headstrong determined heroine. Made for a quick, fun read!
Awesome story line, love the hate/love story line, getting into trouble then falling in love with each other, catching bad guys & treating all the kids as a person, reuniting with the mother.
Her stories always come together great .The women are always sassy and full of grit. The men take them I. Hand with a hard spanking and lots of love. The men are domineering but not so much they won't admit to being human and making a mistake. That makes the stories more believable. Great job Johnnie.
