There is that part of our childhood which is bathed in mystery and suspense, tempered with the promise that all things will be revealed in time. For children of war there is no such promise. They are waiting still. In 1964, six-year old, Nasser and his fourteen-year old sister, Sureia are sent with their grandfather to a small village in the West Bank from their home in South Chicago. As second generation Americans, it's the intention of their parents to save them from the mean streets of the city by learning the ways of Islam from their aunt and uncle. Issues arise for Nasser from competition with his cousins, and while Sureia is immersing herself in the culture and in secretly learning Christianity, things around her are unwinding fast. Within a few months their grandfather departs after falling ill, and Sureia is sent home just before Christmas in the midst of her tailspin. The next two and a half years are harrowing for Nasser who is alone in a family disintegrating from within and in a land destined for war. On June 5th, 1967, Nasser finds himself lost in Ramallah at the start of The Six Day War with his mentally challenged cousin, Adli. The result of his struggles to find his way back home have shaped the rest of his life. The Captive Dove is based upon actual events in the lives and childhood of several extraordinary people whose spirit transcended the madness of the day.

I looked forward to getting back to this book every time I had to put it down.....I felt so involved in the characters and the story. It is magical when a book makes you feel as if you are there and completely engaged as the character. That is how this affected me all along as I learned the history surrounding the Six Day War and the atrocities suffered by all involved, whether physical, emotional or otherwise. I tend to shy away from books about war -- but do not make that mistake here! This is a wonderful story. I have passed this book around and will purchase more as gifts.Product details

This book is a great story about a child caught up in the events of the Middle East. Although it takes place in the '60s, the themes are relevant give the political situation today, although this is not a political book at all. Though provoking and an interesting story. I highly recommend it. Makes a great book group book as there is a lot of fodder for discussion.

Family dynamics, religion, intrigue, adventure, and the impending Six Day War weave a remarkable story. Thanks, John Ouellet, for bringing this story alive for your readers.
I found this book fascinating, thought provoking and hard to put down. I was caught up in the story as Joe finds himself in an environment foreign to him in more than just the geographical sense. While reading the book I found it easy to feel along for the ride and I still find myself going over the story and pondering this character’s amazing journey in both the physical and emotional sense. Great book!

This book is written from the perspective of a young boy, Joe, who lives through some horrific events. It's also about traditions, family dynamics, and how children from the same family can look at their shared history differently and respond differently. As someone close to Joe told him in later years, "it's about breaking the patterns... when we get the chance."
This is a good read. It takes a look at the Jewish-Palestinian problem from the inside. A coming of age story with the Six Day War as a backdrop. A young boy is sent to the West Bank to learn Islam from his relatives. His journey is a fascinating trek through the events of the times. On a personal and world wide level, the story drew me in and didn't let go. I was turning pages with anticipation and greed. I wanted to know what happened to these people and wasn't always pleased with the result. But, such is the nature of war and nations and the people who are shaped by them. The book is scrupulously researched and the story flows with few hitches. The characters are vivid and alive and even the villains are sympathetic. I'm hoping for more from Ouellet.
I was immediately entranced by the character development in The Captive Dove. Quickly I experienced empathy, revulsion and most importantly curiosity to understand how these people would fare. The author tells a story that takes you on an emotional journey with the characters. Although primarily set in the Middle East, this story relates to people and families of every background; rich, poor, educated or disadvantaged. Ouellet, the author, creates not just physical environments but reveals the minds and souls of his characters which yield dimensions that challenge your judgment regarding the people and events contained in this excellent tome of life challenges. Several times while reading the book a single sentence would give me pause and require I put the book down to think about what was revealed. I highly recommend this book as entertaining and enlightening in the complexities of being human.
I thoroughly enjoyed this author's first published book. Based on the true life story of a young boy, Joe, and his teenage sister unexpectedly relocated from their home in Chicago to Palestine's West Bank to live with relatives during the Six Day War. The Story explores the young boy's struggle to learn the language, Culture and unfamiliar religious customs while trying to ingratiate himself with his uncle and young cousins who resent and despise him.
The story is well written with much emphasis on the dysfunctional extended family and Joe's futile efforts to understand the actions of the adults around him. The trauma he experiences from the War leave him scarred long after his return to Chicago to reunite with the family that abandoned him there.
The story moves along effortlessly, the characters well developed and supportive of the narrative. The Author appears to have carefully researched various aspects of the West Bank and the surrounding Locale to present an authentic and believable setting for the story. He (the Author) tells his story dispassionately without choosing sides or offering opinions. Disregarding the few typos that are to be expected in a first printing, and should be cleaned up shortly (?), I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a true coming of age story set amongst the brutality of War.
